Our Safety Program
At Halverson Construction Co., Inc. we are committed to providing our employees with a safe work environment, and to have all our employees develop a culture of safety awareness. In order to meet this commitment, we have developed several safety programs and policies that will aid our employees in these goals. One such effort is our safety program called The Zone.

"I have never seen a company that works so hard to make safety a priority."
— Bill Lewis, IDOT Resident Engineer
Being in The Zone means that Safety is integrated with the other project functions of planning, communication and production. Starting with an analysis to determine what safety concerns exist on the project and what can be done to address them, Halverson Construction Co., Inc. then takes the steps in The Zone to ensure that employees work together as a team to promote safety. After this planning meeting, several on-site safety audits are performed to verify that all safety measures are taken in the field. Furthermore, peer observation is encouraged to be reported and discussed with the Superintendent to ensure that all employees are working in a safe manner. Finally, incentives are offered to encourage employees to work together for the safety of all.

"We send letters to worker's homes explaining the program," says Steve Halverson, President of Halverson Construction. "They also receive congratulations and incentives at home. We want everyone involved - the workers, their families, superintendents - we all need to take safety seriously as a team. That's why we offer incentives to the entire crew on a site if no accidents occur. We want a safe workplace so that all our employees return home safely."
To qualify for The Zone's incentive program, employees must work at least 100 hours in a month. The project Superintendent must complete a "Weekly Tool Box Talk," which outlines various safety topics at the site. Other qualifications require no lost worker time, and no property damage or bodily injury resulting in a cost of more than $500. The Zone awards $25 gift cards if these conditions are met, to each employee on the job.
