Finding Solutions To Tough Challenges

At Halverson Construction Co., Inc. we are eager to take on projects that require overcoming technical engineering challenges. Successful planning, design, and implementation of these complex solutions is what we have become known for in our industry. To that end, we offer our clients the technical knowledge and experience of seven graduate civil engineers, five of whom are Licensed Professional Engineers in the State of Illinois and other states. The value in having such an asset is that the type of problem solving skills that our staff brings to every assignment allows us to complete many projects ahead of schedule.

As testimony for our ability to develop creative solutions to difficult problems, we have highlighted a few of our projects:

• Overhead Crane System
  
  
  The overhead crane system can be used to remove concrete deck, remove and replace floor beams and stringers, handle form materials and reinforcing, as well as place concrete. The system itself is relatively light, and can be attatched to the truss system using existing holes.
  
  Another benefit of overhead cranes is that they are capable of precision work. Our engineering department's innovative adaptation of the Overhead Crane System is a testament to our ability to develop creative solutions to difficult problems.
  
  
  
  
  
• Falsework for Rollover Bridge Replacement
  
  
  The Norfolk Southern Railway Project over the Wabash River at Logansport, Indiana, required construction of a new bridge on falsework adjacent to the existing truss bridge, and change-out using the rollover method during a 16-hour railroad shutdown. Upon completion, the existing structure was demolished using controlled explosives.
  
  With assistance from our structural engineering consultant, Halverson devised a falsework system for a roll-out / roll-in method of bridge replacement. A series of threaded rods with hydraulically controlled jacks was utilized to synchronize the rate of pull along the falsework, minimizing misalignment of the track. Construction of replacement spans was completed in their final vertical position. This allowed for alignment modifications prior to the rollover, and saved project time. Using well-tested construction procedures with innovative approaches, Halverson completed the rollover work in 14 hours!
  
  
  
  
  
• Falsework Shoring Tower
  
  
  Halverson designed and installed a shoring tower system that shored the lift span in the up position, eighty feet above the roadway. By shoring the lift span in the up position, river traffic was able to pass under the bridge continually while construction progressed.
  
  The shoring tower was tied off to the counterweight towers for stability at intermediate points. The bottom of the shoring towers sat on the concrete piers of the lift span, and the tops had a special steel shoe created to cradle the bridge bearings for the lift span. In addition, monitoring of the changing loads was performed with load cells under each bearing of the lift span.
  
  A precise sequence of removal and replacement was established in order to keep the span in balance on the shoring towers. The strict enforcement of this sequence and the load cell monitoring enabled our field crew and engineers to prevent the span from being out of balance once the project was complete..
  
  
• Counterweight Support System
  
  
  In order to complete the project on a fast track, Halverson used our overhead crane system to complete the floor system replacement on the 250 foot long lift span.
  
  However, using this overhead crane posed another engineering challenge to overcome. The added weight of the overhead crane and rails in the lift span had to be offset on the counterweight sides as well in order to keep the span balanced. The existing mechanical system that lifted the bridge could not be counted on to lift this additional weight.
  
  To this end, Halverson designed and installed a counterweight support system that consisted of four, 1000-gallon water tanks on a steel frame that was strapped to the existing concrete counterweights on both sides of the bridge. Adding to and draining water from the tanks adjusted the counterweights to keep the bridge in balance.
  
  
• Material Sled
  
  
  Since river traffic on the Illinois River needed to be maintained during construction, Halverson designed and installed a material sled that slid on rollers on a track attached to the roadway and cantilevered out over the river. The sled was loaded with material on the ground and slid forward out over the river for the overhead crane to hoist material up to the lift span.
  
  The material sled slid back onto the roadway when barge traffic approached the construction zone. This system received praise from the US Coast Guard, since it allowed the channel to be free from workboats, and minimized impact for commercial river traffic.
